Flyers week in photos: 3/7-3/13

This has been the week from hell for the Flyers. They managed to get themselves within four points of a wildcard spot only to hit a major slump and a losing streak all but completely destroying their dull playoff hopes.

A win against the Bruins on Saturday would have been a major stepping stone to a wildcard spot, winning two points and keeping the Bruins from advancing any further. In the third period, it seemed like the Flyers could actually pull off a win, again against a higher level team. Then, with 2:03 left in the third period, Wayne Simmonds was called for tripping against Daniel Paille. With only 14 seconds left in the game, Brad Marchand deflected a shot past Mason which forced the game into overtime and took a point away from the Flyers. Then to add salt to the wound, Brad Marchand also scored in overtime to win the game and throw the Flyers in the pit of quicksand that would be the next week.

Okay, so one loss isn’t that bad. They lost a little ground against Boston, but surely a game against the Devils would be an easy two points to make up for Saturday’s loss right? WRONG! In case you haven’t been watching the Flyers this season, the have a tendency to play worse than teams that they should be able to beat easily. It’s some kind of voodoo magic that we can’t figure out, but the Flyers do it all the time. The Devils scored early thanks to a massive defensive breakdown (what else is new?), but Ryan White deflected a Luke Schenn shot a few minutes later to tie it up. The real killer was the three straight goals in the second and beginning of the third period. Michael Raffl would score a short-handed goal in the third, but that’s as close as the Flyers would get.

I think we’ve all had enough. Hopefully, the playoff talks can finally die. Seven points out of a playoff spot after the last pair of losses, but hey Maybe the Flyers can grab some points against a goalie who has yet to win against the orange and black. Luke Schenn opened the scoring a little over a minute into the first period, but later on Dallas’ Brett Richie tied it up. The game went scoreless from there until 14 minutes into the third period. Lehtonen snaps a 13 game losing streak when playing against the Flyers and the Flyers slip farther from the playoffs.

The Flyers are now TEN points behind the Bruins. The Bruins, Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators are all above the Flyers in the standings. There’s really only one thing you can say to describe Thursday’s game against the Blues: Steve Mason Magic. This must be part of that voodoo magic we talked about earlier because Mason is just unreal. Mason managed to earn the Flyers a point single-handedly forcing the game into a 0-0 overtime. Unfortunately the game went to a shootout which the Flyers just aren’t good at, plus the Blues have shootout king T.J. Oshie. A four-game losing streak is the result of this week’s “effort”.
