This could be the shortest Philadelphia Phillies ICYMI Monday post of the off-season as the Phils still have not made any moves on the FA front – nor have any other teams for that matter. They did make a few coaching changes.
Phillies Coaching Changes:
On Wednesday it was announced that Assistant Pitching Coach Chris Young was promoted to pitching coach, replacing Rick Kranitz. Apparently other teams had expressed interest in Young, including possibly another NL East team, so they promoted him to forestall that. Later in the week they named David Lundquist as an assistant pitching coach to replace Young. Lundquist has been in the Phillies fold for 11 seasons, including the last three as the AAA Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs pitching coach.
Young’s rise has been swift as he was added to the Phillies coaching staff last season, as his first MLB coaching assignment. Prior to that he was involved in scouting with the Houston Astros since 2010.
On Deck 40 Man Roster Deadline:
Tuesday is the deadline for filling out the 40 Man roster with players that will be protected in the Rule 5 Draft, which will happen on 12/13 at the start of the Winter Meetings.
The Phils currently have 35 players on the 40 man, and have five players in their top 30 prospects that would be protected by adding them.
3. Adonis Medina, RHP
12. Daniel Brito, IF
11. Arquimedes Gamboa, IF
16. Jose Gomez, IF
27. Tom Eshelman, RHP
Medina is the highest on MLB Pipeline top 100 prospects at 64 so he is pretty much a lock to be protected. My further prediction is that Brito will also be added. I would not be shocked if Eshelman was also protected as he is the closest to MLB ready of the five.
