The Phillies are making strides to find Ryan Howard’s long-term replacement. The buzz around the organization is that the Phillies are set to potentially spend big money on Dominican slugger Jhailyn Ortiz according to CSNPhilly.com Phillies Insider Jim Salisbury.
The 16-year-old Ortiz stands at 6-2 and weighs nearly 260 pounds. His big, right-handed bat plays as a left fielder, but long-term he seems destined for first base. Per his showcase at the International Prospects Series in Cary, NC last month, Ortiz crushed fastballs, but still is very raw and needs to develop further skills if he hopes to succeed at the Major League level.
The International Signing Period is set to begin on July 2, but the Phillies seemed poised to pay Ortiz a $4 million bonus for signing with them.
Bottom line is that this kid can rake. Anything less than signing him would be disappointing considering the long-time organizational struggles of finding and signing quality foreign talent. Hopefully coming to Citizens Bank Park in 2021: Jhailyn Ortiz.
