Per FC Nantes’ Twitter account, now-former Nantes man and current US men’s national team member Alejandro Bedoya will join the Philadelphia Union.
This is easily the biggest signing the Union have ever made, both in terms of salary and name power. Bedoya’s salary is widely estimated to be upwards of $1M, easily the highest for any current or former Union player. It is anticipated that he will slot into the number 8 role, since vacated by Vincent Nogueira. The Union have tried Tranquillo Barnetta and Warren Creavalle in that spot, but it became obvious they were temporary fixes and a change had to be made.
This isn’t the first time Bedoya has flirted with the U. The Union and Ligue 1 Nantes nearly had a deal last year for Bedoya, but it fell through at the last moment.
MLS has not confirmed the signing yet but is expected to once the paperwork is complete.
