Alex Lyon Inks Two Year Extension

With the UFA signing period dying down, Ron Hextall moved the focus to bringing back his RFA players and inked goalie Alex Lyon to a two year extension.

Per Cap Friendly, Lyon’s deal is a 2-way in year one and a 1-way in year two. It comes with a 750K cap hit, which given his third goalie role, is fair. There’s no real risk with this deal by itself.

Even as a one way in the second year, there would be no risk as he could be waived back to the AHL if he’s not good enough or falls out of favor with the organization.

With Carter Hart coming, and Brian Elliott and Michal Neuvirth entrenched in the NHL, Lyon and Stolarz and Hart will have a log jam with the Phantoms. Of course, given Neuvirth’s injury history and the fact Stolarz only played 4 games (3 ECHL, 1 AHL) last season due to injury, he is the third goalie on the depth chart heading into training camp.

Given the multitude of goalies who hit waivers and go unclaimed every camp, the risk he’s lost for nothing is negligible.
