Army Black Knights @ Temple Owls 09/02/16 7:00 PM

It is the Inaugural Throw Forward Temple Football Thursday and there is nothing quite like the first game of any season, but for the Temple Owls , looking to see what they have this year after one of the best season’s in school history, this one may be a bit more butterfly inducing than usual. See my season preview here.

They will face the Army West Point Black Knights to begin that process. The last time they met was a small turning point in Temple’s program as they won 33-14 back on 10/19/13. It was Head Coach Matt Rhule‘s and Phillip Walker‘s first wins, after an 0-6 start. Walker has been the starter ever since. Temple has a 7-4 record all time in the series.

Army runs a triple option so right away the D-line will be tested, and then the secondaries.  “We want to run the football, and that’s not a secret to anybody. Temple probably knows that,” Army coach Jeff Monken said this week. “I’m sure they are preparing to play the option run game, and we’re planning to run the option against them.” Jr. QB Amhad Bradshaw, 5-10, 198  (2015: 429 passing yards, 5 TDs, 468 yards rushing, 3.6 avg., 5 TDs) is not afraid to run the ball. The Black Knights beat all but 11 teams last season in rushing YPG (244.25). While Bradshaw is the starter, So. Chris Carter could also see time at quarterback. They return 7 players in all on offense.

Army also returns nine starters on defense. They are led by Sr. MLBs Jeremy Timpf, 6-1, 225, Sr. (92 tackles last year, 209 career) and Andrew King, 6-0, 246 Sr. (92 tackles, 16.5 TFL), Since they were in most games last season (7/10 losses by a TD or less, five of those by five points or less) they could keep this close for a good part of the game.

Fearless Forecast: I envision a slow start by the Owls, but eventually their deep defensive talent will catch up to the Army rushing attack and will win this 28-14.
