With the 19th Overall pick the Flyers took Center Jay O’Brien.
O’Brien is committed to Providence College for next season, so just like Farabee, he’s likely 2-3 years away from making an impact with the big club.
With the game trending to smaller faster players, O’Brien is a guy who can fit that mold going forward. Long term, he probably projects as a middle six center, but with Nolan Patrick and Sean Couturier holding the top 2 center spots down, having O’Brien as a faster option for the future is a plus.
O’Brien was likely a bit of a reach and could have been available in the mid to late 20s if not early second round. However, Morgan Frost was also considered a reach last year and Frost quickly dispelled that label by tearing up the OHL.
If O’Brien tears up the NCAA the same way, the Flyers will be thankful to have a plethora of talent. Ron Hextall has shown he knows how to draft some solid players, so O’Brien is hopefully par for the course.
