In the midst of the hype of the NFL Draft, the Phillies played this afternoon and fell to the Cardinals, 9-3. This was the Phils third straight loss since they won the series opener against the Cards on Monday.
David Buchanan took the mound and remains winless this season. Buchanan gave up three quick runs to St. Louis in the first inning. The Phillies fought back and tied the game in the 3rd inning thanks to the bat of Darin Ruf. They quickly conceded the tie in the bottom of the inning when Matt Adams hit a three-run home run, giving the Cardinals the lead they would never give up. Buchanan lasted 4.1 innings and surrendered seven earned runs.
Tim Cooney made his Major League debut for the Cardinals today. He battled over his 2.1 innings pitched and allowed three runs. He recorded three strikes outs, one walk, and gave up a two-run home run to Ruf. St. Louis’ bullpen came in and shut down the Phillies offense for the rest of the ballgame. Matt Holliday continued his hot hitting going 2-4 and increased his batting average to .379.
The Phillies head to Miami to take on the Marlins in a three game series. First game is tomorrow with first pitch at 7:10 PM.
