Flyers Beat Arizona 5-2 to End Successful West Coast Swing

The Flyers ended a west coast swing with a 5-2 win over Arizona.

Before the game, the Flyers announced Michal Neuvirth was back on IR and Alex Lyon was on his way up from the AHL. Also, Brian Elliott would not dress for the game as he dealt with being dinged up in practice.

The Flyers opened the scoring midway through the first period as Claude Giroux snuck a shot through a screen from the high slot to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead. In the final minute of the period, Shayne Gostisbehere got a tally on the powerplay to make it 2-0.

Early in the second, Alex Galchenyuk got Arizona on the board with a powerplay goal of his own. There isn’t much surprise here given the Flyers penalty kill has been near the bottom of the league for 3 years running and despite changing the personnel, not one change has been on the PK system or the coaches who run it.

Late in the second period, Sean Couturier tallied a goal to send the Flyers to the third period with a 2 goal lead.

Instead of sitting back on the lead, Wayne Simmonds pursued a loose neutral zone puck, pushed it past the Coyote defender one handed and found Claude Giroux for his second goal in front to make it 4-1.

Michael Grabner made it 4-2 late in the third, but Oskar Lindblom hit the empty net to make it 5-2 and send the Flyers back home for the rematch with the Coyotes on Thursday.

The Flyers finished the road trip with points in all four games and a 3-0-1 record.

Travis Konecny missed part of the third period after being sent for evaluation by the concussion spotter. He did return after passing his tests.

Before the game, Ron Hextall noted that JVR is about 10-14 days away from returning from injury while Michael Raffl will be back late in November or early December.
