Braun slots in as another right shooting veteran defender with a veteran presence. He’s an upgrade over the recently bought out Andrew MacDonald. Between Braun’s salary and MacDonald’s dead space due to the buyout, it’s a salary neutral upgrade on potentially the third pair.

With the trade, the Flyers right handed defenders stand at Matt Niskanen, Justin Braun and Phil Myers. Mark Friedman will likely be the first callup for issues on the right side. On the left side, Shayne Gostisbehere, Ivan Provorov, Travis Sanheim, Robert Hagg, Sam Morin and David Schlemko all occupy one way contracts. Schlemko will likely find his way back to the AHL. Given the fact that stylistically, Hagg, Morin and Braun play the same role, it’s likely one of them will be moved. Carrying Schlemko as the extra defender will not impact any development of prospects

With Braun only being a one year commitment, he’s likely to occupy a spot, but easily can be dropped if Phil Myers outplays him. Right now, the Flyers will likely be forced to move one more defender in a trade. As for Braun, his job is solely to tutor the future defenders in Myers, Sanheim, and Friedman.
