Flyers Extinguish Flames 5-3

Anthony Stolarz made his NHL debut in net, stopping 29 of 32 shots he faced.

The first period began with the Flyers doing something all too common this season, giving up an early goal as the Flames got on a the board 1-0 with a short handed goal as Stolarz missed the save on the second shot he faced in the NHL when TJ Brodie backhanded a puck past him. This was arguably the second scariest moment of the goal against, as Travis Konecny would miss a good chunk of the first and second periods after being injured attempting to defend Dennis Wideman on the play as well.

Luckily, the Flyers would own the rest of the period and the second as well. Michael Raffl tied the game on a feed from Jake Voracek before the teams would break for the intermission. The second period was all Philadelphia as Jake Voracek would score off a Flames defender early. Chris VandeVelde would deflect a pass from Roman Lyubimov into the net for his fourth goal of the season, the assist was the first of Lyubimov’s career. Then Wayne Simmonds would bury a breakaway to send the Flyers to the second intermission up 4-1.

In the third, the Flames would get one back as Matt Tkachuk would beat Stolarz to bring the deficit to two goals. However, Roman Lyubimov would score on rebound from a Michael Del Zotto shot to increase the lead 5-2. Late in the game, Alex Chiasson brought it back 5-3 with a shorthanded effort.

A late game scrum and mini-brawl saw Radko Gudas of the Flyers along with Dennis Wideman and Matt Tkachuck of the Flames all get sent to the showers early. Tkachuk tangled with Travis Konecny of the Flyers, while Gudas and Wideman squared off as both tried to aid their teammates. Order was restored, with the Flyers gaining a 4 minute man-advantage. With Konecny needing to serve a penalty, Chris VandeVelde saw a bit of time on the final powerplay. All three of the Flames goals were scored in special teams situations. Brandon Manning was scratched for Andrew MacDonald due to precautionary reasons. Scott Laughton was out for Lyubimov on a coach’s decision. Boyd Gordon and Sean Couturier both sat due to injury. Nick Schultz rounded out the Flyers players who did not play, he was also a coach’s decision.

The Flyers host the Bruins on Tuesday at 730pm.
