Cal Clutterbuck’s goal in the seventh round of the shootout gave the New York Islanders a 2-1 victory over the Flyers, ending Philadelphia’s four-game winning streak.

Mikhail Grabovski and Clutterbuck were the New York goal scorers. Brock Nelson and Thomas Hickey both added an assist. Jaroslav Halak did not face many shots, but did allow 2 goals on 18 shots. Halak also stopped 6/7 shots in the shootout.

Nick Schultz and Chris VandeVelde scored for the Flyers. Vincent Lecavalier recorded two assists and Andrew MacDonald notched one. Steve Mason was solid in net, stopping 28/30 Islander shots.

Tensions were high as the Flyers and Islanders met Thursday night in South Philadelphia. Just over two minutes into the period saw the Flyers’ Ryan White and Islanders’ Matt Martin throw down, in what would set the tone for a physical game.

Despite just six shots on goal in the first period, Nick Schultz would pot his second goal of the season on a feed from Vincent Lecavalier. The rejuvenated center found a cutting Schultz in the slot for a quick snap shot to beat Jaroslav Halak.

Despite being greatly outplayed in the first period, the Flyers entered the locker room with the lead. That lead would grow to two thanks to Chris VandeVelde. VandeVelde may be perhaps the hottest Flyer, scoring for his third consecutive game.

The Flyers would hold the lead for most of the second period until Luke Schenn’s horrendous turnover. Schenn, looking to clear the puck, weakly tried to go up the right side, but instead passed the puck onto the stick of Mikhail Grabovski, who quickly snapped a shot top shelf to beat Steve Mason.

Just over two minutes later, Cal Clutterbuck took a big rebound off Brock Nelson’s shot to tie the game at two a piece.

The second period would end with the Islanders outplaying and outshooting (22-11) the Flyers.

The Metro division foes would play a tight checking third period that would result in few chances for either team. Despite playing on their heels for most of the game, the Flyers would take the division leaders to overtime, where the extra period would fail to find a winner, despite a breakaway attempt from Sean Couturier.

So the Flyers and Islanders would enter a shootout for the second time this season. Down 1-0 in the shootout and down to their last shooter, Wayne Simmonds would score to extend the match. In the seventh round, Clutterbuck would pot the winner as Couturier was denied on the other side.

The Flyers fall to 0-1-2 versus the Islanders on the season.
