Flyers Fly Past Caps in Home Opener 8-2

The Flyers opened the home slate of games this season by absolutely stomping the Washington Capitals by a score of 8-2.

After a heart breaking loss Tuesday to Nashville, the Flyers came out roaring against Washington to open the home slate this season. Scott Laughton, Sean Couturier, and Claude Giroux all had a pair of goals, while Valteri Filppula and Wayne Simmonds each added one as well. Shayne Gostisbehere and Jake Voracek also had three assists each while Brian Elliott stopped 21 of 23 shots in the win.

Just over two minutes later, Jakub Vrana tied it for Washington as the Flyers defense broke down in front.

Later, in a play that reminded everyone of Mike Richards in 2010 against Montreal, Scott Laughton would score short handed to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead. They would not look back from here.

Early in the second, Wayne Simmonds buried a feed from Voracek to make the lead 3-1. Claude Giroux would score a 5 on 5 even strength goal to make it 4-1, but before the goal could be announced, Washington got one more back as Nick Backstrom wristed a puck in.

Valteri Filppula scored late on the second as he took a feed from Jordan Weal who made a nice move out of the corner to set up Filppula’s shot to score.

The third period was a period of re-runs, as Laughton, Couturier, and Giroux each buried their second goal of the night. Couturier’s second goal required an official review as the referee missed the puck initially crossing the line.

Midway through the third period, Radko Gudas and Tom Wilson exchanged greetings and well wishes to each other, the referees rewarded this display by sending both players to an early shower.

The Flyers pick up on Tuesday against Florida.
