The Flyers announced today that they have mutually parted ways with longtime goaltending coach Jeff Reese. This ends a run of almost 6 years with Reese instructing the Flyers’ netminders.

This is certainly strange timing for Reese to be leaving Philadelphia. After being kept around by Paul Holmgren through some brutal years, Reese was an instrumental part of Steve Mason’s dramatic improvement over the past two seasons. Reese and Mason reportedly have a great relationship, and Mason was apparently shaken up by his departure.

There is no word yet as to what exactly prompted this move. The words ‘mutual parting of ways’ tend to be used very liberally within the realm of sport. Maybe something was going on behind the scenes. Maybe Hextall, as a first year GM, simply wants to bring in his own goaltending coach. Maybe it’s part of a Marcus Mariota trade? For now, this definitely strikes me as a bit of a head-scratcher.

We will keep you posted with any updates.
