Flyers July 1 Full of Depth Signings

With the big moves already out of the way, the Flyers had a mostly quiet UFA day full of depth signings for the Phantoms.

Chuck Fletcher signed 2 players he was quite familiar with from his Wild days, Forward Kurtis Gabriel and Defender Nate Prosser. Both deals have AAV’s of 700K and will likely help the Phantoms. It’s possible Prosser is the seventh defender after the Flyers bought out David Schlemko in a very strange move as it only clears 125K in extra cap space (assuming the Flyers buried him in the AHL) while saddling the Flyers with an extra 600K next season.

At age 33 and already having spent last season as a mentor on the Iowa Wild, Prosser is easily the veteran defender who will lead the Phantoms. With the Flyers defense prospects all graduating and Phil Myers probably making the opening night roster, the Phantoms need bodies right now and Prosser certainly will provide that and keep them competitive.

Gabriel is far more of a fourth line grinder type. He’s much more Dale Weise, but without the long term contract. At age 26, he’s probably just as much an AHL tweener but he might see callups if the Flyers decide an energy guy is needed. Kurtis Gabriel should be familiar to the Flyers as the guy who boarded Nolan Patrick earlier this season.

The Flyers also signed former LA King Andy Andreoff to a 1 year deal worth 750K.

Andreoff should join the Phantoms and provide some veteran leadership. In the AHL, he’s a solid scorer and top six forward. In the NHL, he’s probably a 13th forward.

The Flyers also added goalie JF Berube, defenders Tyler Wotherspoon, Chris Bigras and Forward Kyle Criscuolo who also will provide more depth to the Phantoms. Berube should battle Alex Lyon for the starting job in Lehigh Valley and gives the Flyers the flexibility to send Felix Sandstrom down to Reading if he struggles or let him go back to Sweden.

With the Flyers big moves being the Kevin Hayes trade and sign and the acquisitions of Matt Niskanen and Justin Braun on defense, how do you feel about the Flyers roster heading into next season?
