Ron Hextall has kept busy after a massive weekend, signing returning UFA forward Chris Vandevelde to a 2 year contract extension. The team announced the extension Monday night via Twitter. Per Frank Seravalli, the terms of the extension are 2 years, 1.425 million dollars (712,500 AAV).
At face value, this isn’t a bad signing by Hextall. Vandevelde was useful as a fourth line player last year, showed marked improvement on the penalty kill, and has prior experience playing for new Flyers coach Dave Hakstol. Vandevelde is coming off of his most successful NHL season to date (9G, 6A, 72GP).
This is also an indication that Ron Hextall and Dave Hakstol are aiming for a fourth line that can be effective in limited minutes. Pierre-Edouard Bellemare is signed to a very similar contract, and Zac Rinaldo is now out of the picture. Good signs from the newfound Good Flyers Management™.
