Per Pierre LeBrun, the Flyers have agreed to a two year contract with UFA goaltender Michal Neuvirth. The contract will pay 1.5 million in the first year and 1.75 million in the second year, meaning an AAV of 1.625 million dollars.
Neuvirth, a 27 year old netminder, put up a .914 save percentage last season in 32 games split between the Islanders and Sabres. His career statistics are shown below (via hockeyreference.com).
It’s difficult to be unhappy with this signing. Backup goaltending was arguably the Flyers biggest need entering unrestricted free agency this summer. Neuvirth is a pretty clear upgrade over Ray Emery and Rob Zepp. With Neuvirth in the picture, the Flyers can be comfortable giving Steve Mason occasional nights off, and will be in much better shape if he misses time due to injury again. Good signing by Ron Hextall on what should be a relatively quiet free agency day in Philadelphia.
