Flyers Stage Comeback Against Columbus and Win 7-4

Math happened to the Flyers this week. After starting the season strong in the advance analytics metrics but dropping 3 losses in Western Canada, the Flyers process paid off with 3 wins this week including tonight’s 7-4 come from behind win against Columbus.

Jake Voracek got the first goal of the game after a failed clear by the Blue Jackets allowed James vanRiemsdyk to pick up a puck in the corner and direct a pass to the low circle where Voracek buried his third goal of the season.

About two and a half minutes later, Boone Jenner tied it by banking a shot off Brian Elliott and into the net from behind the goal line. Early in the 2nd, Pierre-Luc Dubois gave the Blue Jackets the lead.

JVR would tie it late in the second with a powerplay goal only for the Flyers to give the lead back 25 seconds later when Boone Jenner scored again.

Columbus would increase the lead to 4-2 early in the third when Josh Anderson out-muscled Robert Hagg to a rebound on an intentionally wide slap shot off the back boards.

Shayne Gostisbehere, during a 4 on 4, got a goal paired with Travis Sanheim showing that Robert Hagg might be the reason he’s started slow.

JVR would tie it again moments later tipping a slap-pass from Ivan Provorov into the top corner behind Korpisalo.

Unlike last season when the team would break and quit this year’s team responded to being shorthanded and  with half a period to play in a tie game a different way. They scored five straight goals.

Kevin Hayes scored short handed by tipping a pass and going in solo on a breakaway and jamming his own rebound into the net.

Michael Raffl hit the empty net and with a late powerplay chance, Travis Konecny buried one behind Korpisalo for the 7-4 win.

While the Flyers never quit, they used the possession dominance to bail out a weak game from Brian Elliot who was playing his third game in six days and  Robert Hagg’s pair of absolutely horrendous plays that gave Columbus their third and fourth goals.

With the back to back tomorrow, expect to see Carter Hart in net and possibly Sam Morin making his season debut in for Hagg as well.
