Per Dave Isaac of the Courier Post, the Flyers have informed the newly acquired Sam Gagner that he will not be bought out and will remain a Flyer. It was rumored that Gagner, who was acquired as part of the Nicklas Grossmann trade, was a possible buyout candidate.
Make no mistake about it, this is good news for the Flyers. We spoke for a bit this weekend on why Sam Gagner deserved to stay here, and it’s good to see that Ron Hextall has arrived at the same conclusion.
Gagner is a reasonably productive player on a low-risk deal with just one year remaining. He is certainly better than any UFA forward who would be willing to sign a similar contract for one year. Best case scenario here is that Gagner breaks out in Philadelphia and turns into a legitimate second line scoring threat who contributes on the power play. Worst case scenario, he disappoints and is not resigned for next season. Either way, Gagner remaining in Philadelphia was the right play here. Ron Hextall continues to make good decisions in a week that is one of the best in recent memory for Philadelphia Flyers management.
