In a trade that was made official shortly after 2 A.M. EST, the Flyers have sent their longest tenured player, Braydon Coburn, to Tampa Bay. It was reported earlier on Sunday that Hextall was looking to move Coburn before the deadline, so this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
In return, the Flyers will get back Tampa Bay’s 2015 1st and 3rd round draft picks along with defenseman Radko Gudas. Gudas is only 24 years old, but is an average player at best. Acquiring the draft picks is extremely important for the Flyers, so it’s tough to find any way to be unhappy with this return.
Hextall went into the weekend in possession of Flyers’ first round choice, followed by nothing until the Sharks’ 3rd rounder that was acquired for Tye McGinn. Two days later, he is now in possession of an extra pick in each of the first three rounds of this year’s draft. Hextall said that, even with the Flyers clinging to very slight playoff chances, he wouldn’t be reluctant to sell. He has definitely stayed true to his word on that. Gotta say that he has done well so far.
As for Braydon Coburn, he will join an absolutely stacked blueline in Tampa Bay. Tampa, when healthy, has several puck moving defensemen that will fit in nicely alongside Coburn. During his 8+ years in Philadelphia, Coburn never quite got the appreciation he deserved from a large portion of the fan base. Hopefully this trade will serve as a lesson to some of those people. An NHL GM valued Coburn enough to part with 1st and 3rd round draft choices and another player. With all due respect to Dave Nonis, and NHL GM is typically a much better talent evaluator than a casual fan. Coburn is a good defenseman who is worth every bit of that return. If he wasn’t appreciated for his play during his time here, hopefully people will at least notice the glaring hole that now exists in the Flyers’ defensive unit following his departure.
9 hours to go until the trade deadline. Gotta be happy with everything so far. I wouldn’t be surprised to see another move or two today. We’ll keep you posted.
