Flyers Trade Wayne Simmonds to Nashville for Ryan Hartman

The Flyers made a somewhat expected trade deadline move shipping out Wayne Simmonds to Nashville for Ryan Hartman and a conditional 4th round pick in 2020.

Simmonds was a locker room and on ice leader who had the grit and toughness to be beloved by Flyers fans. He mixed Broad Street Bullies physicality with modern skill to amass a very solid prime of his career in Philadelphia. He will likely go down as one of the most popular Flyers from his time here.

In return, the Flyers received Ryan Hartman from Nashville and a conditional 4th round pick.

His boxcars are a middle six forward. Given his age, he’s a play-now type player and Hartman has probably hit his ceiling.

Given his advance metrics, Hartman is likely a middle six forward who can drive possession at a break even rate.  This season, Peter Laviolette deployed him in a heavily defensive role, and Hartman still posted positive possession results and nearly break even relative possession.

In order to succeed, Hartman needs to look at being Ryan Hartman and not trying to fill the skates left by Wayne Simmonds.
