Speculation going into Ron Hextall’s end of season press conference was that Craig Berube’s job status would be definitively announced. Welp, Hextall very quickly made it known that he has not yet come to a decision. Hextall told reporters “At this point, he’s still our head coach..the decision hasn’t been made… I’m not going to make a hasty decision, one that I’ll regret later”.
This doesn’t come as a huge surprise after the way things developed today. Hextall is a deliberate guy who comes off like doesn’t want to fire a coach without a thorough evaluation first.
To me, Hextall sounds like he is waiting to find out what comes next before letting go of Berube. Several reputable coaches, including Todd McLellan and Claude Julien, could become options within the next couple weeks. I think it’s very possible that Hextall is looking towards other coaches, but wants to explore all available options before making that decision. I’d think that if Hextall was fully committed to Berube, he’d say “Craig Berube will be our coach next season”. He said nothing of the sort. I would not be in the slightest bit surprised to see Berube let go before the end of the month.
As for now, however, Craig Berube is still head coach of the Flyers, and it’s not the end of the world. We will have more analysis coming as this continues to develop.
