Phillies third base prospect Maikel Franco has been on fire over the last week. Since May 4, Franco has been riding an 8-game hitting streak where he’s gone 15 for 33 with 3 HR and 11 RBI. During that time frame he’s raised his season batting average from .308 to .346.
The Phillies third ranked prospect according the MLB.com just may be nearing return to the Major Leagues and one that GM Ruben Amaro Jr. hopes will be permanent.
“He’s getting closer and closer,” Amaro told MLB.com. “We just want to make sure he’s ready to be a big leaguer for a long time when we bring him to the big leagues.”
With Phillies third baseman Cody Asche optioned to AAA Lehigh Valley after Monday’s game to work to become a left fielder, the only question that Phillies fans are asking now is when they will see Franco at Citizens Bank Park.
The wait may only be a few days longer as a call-up is anticipated for the weekend series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. This coming Thursday will be the last of the 40-day Minor League clock that Franco is on, after which his free agency would be delayed until 2021
In a perfect world, Franco would have been called up for today’s game, but for Phillies fan, now we play the waiting game.
