Match Preview: Philadelphia Union @ Columbus Crew SC 05/09/18 7:30 PHL17

After a frankly embarrassing no-show to start the road trip, it does not get any easier for your Philadelphia Union (2-4-2, 8 Pts, 9th Place Eastern Conference) against the still in Columbus Crew (4-3-3, 15 Pts, 5th Place ) 3-1-1 at home.

Union/Crew Series History:

This will be their 24th meeting all time, with the Crew holding a 12-8-3, advantage, but the U leads 4-1-1 in their last six matches.

Their last meeting was back on 3/17 when they settled for a 0-0 draw a Talen Energy Stadium.

Last Time Out:

As I noted above the Union were out everythinged, in a 3-Nil loss at Toronto FC. Columbus managed a scoreless draw with the  Seattle Sounders FC on the road.

Crew Cuts:

The obvious man to mark is ex  LA GalaxyGyasi Zardes, who leads his new team with five goals, though three were in their first two games.

Union dues:

GK Andre Blake despite the score, was really the lone bright spot in the Toronto match, as none of the goals were saveable. All-time he is 2-0-1 against Columbus with a GAA of 0.67. He may be the only thing keeping the U in this one.

In a totally unrelated note, the Union formally announced one of the worst kept secrets in MLS today. Union Charter Member MF Sebastien Le Toux will retire as a Philadelphia Union. In that zolo season he had 14 goals and 11 assists, still the only Union player with the double double. For his career he is one of 19 players in the 50/50 club and one of only eight to reach that with one club – he would get 9/7 with other clubs.

“Philadelphia is where I had the most opportunities on and off the field,” said Le Toux. “It is where I found career success with the Philadelphia Union, met my wife, and found my forever home with friends, family, and fans that have become family.”

He will become the inaugural inductee in newly created Union Ring of Honor on Saturday, June 23.

Phearless Phorecast:

Head Coach Jim Curtin said after the Toronto match “I know we will have a good response against Columbus, they play tomorrow traveling to Seattle so they will be on the same rest as us.  They’re a good opponent but one where we can get on the road and get points, at the end of the day we have two more road games and we want to chase both of them.”

I wish I could slake my thirst on the Blue and Gold kool-aid, but nothing they showed me on Saturday says they will get a result in this match. 2-1 Columbus Crew SC.
