Perez Puzzles Phillies Who Fall to Braves 5-1

Coming off their 7th straight 1 run win, the Philadelphia Phillies were looking for some more offense off of the just called up Atlanta Braves starter Williams Perez, but it was Perez who was the story of the night.

Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff, did not have his best stuff as the Braves scored single runs in each of the 1st 3 innings, on a melange of hits, walks and 2 Phils errors.  It could have been a lot worse in the 1st when a rare fielding error by Maikel Franco loaded the bases w/ one out, but Jerad got a k of Gordon Beckham, and a go of Erick Aybar, to get him out of the jam. The 2nd E, an errant throw by Cameron Rupp on a SB attempt by the speedy Mallex Smith gave him 3rd base. He then scored on a sac fly.  Perez meanwhile was befuddling the Phils w/ 92/93 mph sinkers, and a mix of off speed slop, that they never seemed to catch up to, inducing weak ground balls – his go/fo ratio was 13/2 by the end of the night – and a few ks.

1st 1-2-3 in the 4th by Jerad felt like an SDI, and then to reward him, the 1st hit of the day for the Phillies was an opposite field shot by Ryan Howard (8 {22nd at Turner [3 over David Wright for the most by a visitor], 51st against the Braves}) well over the wall. But no real SDI for Jerad as Freddy Freeman, the only guy on the Braves team (6 of their 9) to hit HR’s, answered w/ one over the RF wall, for his 2nd of the series. That ended Eickhoff’s night w/ a line of 4.1 in, 7H, 4R – 3 earned, 1 BB, 2 K’s, and the one HR. Brett Oberholtzer came on in relief and threw 2.2 SO, 1 hit  innings to keep the Phils in this one.

It was not until the 8th inning that the Phils got their 2nd hit off of Perez, but to no avail and the Braves added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning off of Elvis Araujo, w/ the “help” of a 3rd Phillies error.

The L went to Eickhoff, and the well deserved W went to Perez who exited after 8, w/ the 2 H, 1R, 4K, no BBs

Streaks End: Braves 11 game home losing streak – only their 2nd home win this season, 3 game Phillies win  and one run win streaks.

Streak continues:  Odubel Herrera hitting and OB streak went to 9 games, on a 2 out single in the 9th.

Next ups: Tomorrow night again @ 7:10 when Vince Velasquez (4-1 2.17) faces Aaron Blair (0-2 3.31) for the deciding game of the series and the end of the 10 game road trip.
