Just mere hours after the Flyers doubled up the Bolts 4-2, their AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms got into action at PPL Center in Allentown.
Alex Lyon started in goal for the Phantoms and the Devils rolled with Ken Appleby. Lyon continued the roll he started when fellow Flyers prospect Anthony Stolarz was called up to the NHL stopping all the shots he faced.
Nicolas Aube-Kubel notched his first AHL fighting major, instigating a fight with Albany’s Blake Coleman. Aube-Kubel got 2+5+10 for the endeavor.
The first period ended scoreless. In the second period special teams dominated. Greg Carey scored a powerplay goal after retrieving his own rebound off a blocked shot. Scott Laughton scored a short handed goal late in the period after pestering Reece Scarlett for a puck.
On this goal Laughton said, “I was just kinda following the D man, just kinda took the puck off him. That goalie (Appleby) used to play with me in junior and I just tried to get his number there.”
For Laughton, Coach Scott Gordon praised him for finally getting one as he had several good chances recently but had yet to score a goal.
Scott Gordon, praised the whole team, “our players did a really good job not getting boxed in on entries.” This shows a delving into the analytical side of the game, as Gordon’s praise really came from the fact the Phantoms avoided allowing offensive zone time to the Devils and did a good job consistently pushing play into Albany’s end.
