It will be an abbreviated Phillies ICYMI Monday this week, as little happened with the Holiday weekend, and some important MLB off season dates impending.
Phillies Moves of the Week:
The only moves involved two players who had been DFA’d earlier to make room on the 40 man roster.
On Wednesday 11/23, the Phillies traded RHP Jimmy Cordero to the Washington Nationals for a player to be named later or cash. MLB Pipeline had him as the #25 top Phillies prospect. Brought here in the 2015 trade that sent OF Ben Revere to the Toronto Blue Jays, he went 10-12 with a 3.80 ERA in 115 MiLB appearances over five seasons. They also announced the outright release of RHP David Buchanan. He never made it to the bigs this past season. His record was 10-9 with a 3.98 ERA in 26 starts and one relief appearance at AAA Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, with only 95 k’s in 167.1 innings.
Impending MLB Off Season Dates:
Maybe the biggest deadline is on Thursday 12/1 when the collective bargaining agreement expires. It is expected that the talks could go to or just past that deadline, but the prevailing opinion is that this is too important for both sides not to get a new CBA done, and it most likely will. It is this writer’s hope that they will take this opportunity to fine tune the September expanded roster rules to bring some order to the chaos that can be late September games, especially where the use of relief pitchers is concerned.
The next day is the “non-tender” deadline. By that date teams must tender their pre-arbitration and arbitration-eligible players contracts for the upcoming season. Any players without multiyear contracts and fewer than six years of service time become free agents if they do not receive a contract offer. This could potentially dump a lot of FA’s onto the market.
One of the most wonderful times of the year comes for Hot Stovers when the Winter Meetings are held 12/5-8 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center outside Washington, D.C. The first three days especially, expect rumors galore postulating upon possible big FA signings and blockbuster trades. Some of those may even happen. At the end of these meetings on 12/8 the Rule 5 Draft is held.
I am sure with all these deadlines, I will have more to report next Monday.
