Hopefully that there are only 37 days until Pitchers and Catchers report to Philadelphia Phillies spring training in Clearwater Fla. will help phans get through this cold snap.
Meanwhile not a whole lot of activity from the Phils this week, just the announcement on Wednesday of ten players signed to MiLB contracts with invitations to major league spring training.
First batch of Phillies non-roster invitees:
The ten players are RHP’s Pedro Beato and Steve Geltz; IF’s Pedro Florimon, Will Middlebrooks, Heiker Meneses and Mitch Walding; C’s Eric Fryer and Logan Moore; C/1B/OF Matt McBride and OF Danny Ortiz
The player most likely to go north with the club is Florimon, 31, who before an ankle injury prematurely ended his stint with the Phils in September, batted .348 with four 2B, one 3B and 6 RBI’s in 6 PA. Since he can play the IF and OF his chances were augmented by the loss of Andres Blanco to FA in the off-season.
Another intriguing invitee is Middlebrooks, 29, who has a .663 OPS in 1,234 PA, in parts of six seasons with the San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers and the Boston Red Sox where he earned a WS ring in 2013. At AAA Round Rock last season he batted .258, 23 HRs, 64 RBI’s, .327 OBP, and .529 slugging. The Phils IF is pretty crowded, but he could be a good guy to stash at AAA Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs in case of injury or trades.
I will have more on these guys and other non-roster invitees to come when the full slate is finalized.
As noted last week, Friday Jan. 12th is the deadline to exchange salary arbitration, so there may be news on that front this week, as well as more invitees to S.T.
Until then now that we know who, Atlanta Falcons, and when, Saturday 1/13 4:45PM at Lincoln Financial Field, that other outdoor team on Pattison Ave will start the playoffs, I will once again leave you with:
