Today’s edition of Philadelphia Phillies ICYMI Monday details the 40 man roster moves on the deadline for protecting players from the Rule 5 draft, the latest coaching hire, as well as the 2017 Spring Training schedule.
Rule 5 Draft Protection:
As noted last week the Phillies had 2 open spots on the 40-man roster, ahead of Monday’s deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 Draft, which takes place on December 14th.
The Phils wound up protecting four valuable arms by adding RHPs Seranthony Domínguez, Franklyn Kilomé, José Taveras and LHP Ranger Suárez, while DFA’ing RHPs Mark Appel and Alberto Tirado, and outrighting LHP Elniery García to AAA Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. They also claimed infielder Engelb Vielma from the San Francisco Giants.
Kilome, Suarez and Dominguez, all 22 yrs old are Nos 7,14, and 28th ranked prospects in the Phillies farm system per MLBPipeline.com. Tavarez, 24, while not ranked, made the jump from High A Clearwater Threshers, to LHV, and then back to AA Reading Fightin’s, going a combined 9-6 with a 2.22 ERA in 25 starts.
“We’re really excited for all four of these guys,” Phillies GM Matt Klentak said. “All have worked extremely hard and they are all deserving of being added to our roster. All are products of our international scouting operation, Sal [Agostinelli] and his group. Those guys continue to crank out players. They’ve done a great job.”
Vielma, 23, a Utility IF, was a combined .229 in 121 games at SF’s AA and AAA teams in 2017.
“He is a really talented defender,” Klentak said. “He is still developing physically. He’s an intriguing claim.”
Latest Coaching Hire:
On Wednesday the Phillies announced the addition of 28-year-old Pedro Guerrero as their assistant hitting coach to John Mallee.
Guerrero, who never reached the MLB level as a player or coach, was the bench coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers Rookie-level affiliate Ogden Raptors the last two seasons. An IF who played eight seasons in the Dodgers’ Minor League system from 2006-13, slashed .236/.287/.351 with 23 HRs and 163 RBIs in 411 MILB games.
Spring Is Coming: Less than 80 days ’til P&C!
The Phils also released their Spring Training schedule this week.
For those who ache to hear the first smack of ball meeting glove as soon as the World Series ends, the first day for Pitchers and Catchers is February 14th. with the first full squad workout being February 19th.
As has become a tradition, the first exhibition game on February 22nd will be against a college team, the University of Tampa, while the official Home Opener will be on February 24th, against the Baltimore Orioles.
For the lovers of The Green – and who isn’t right now in the midst of this incredible Eagles season – the annual St. Patrick’s Day game will take place against Atlanta on March 17.
The ST finale will be Tuesday, March 27, against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
There is not much on the MLB calendar this week with the only important date being Friday December 1st, which has an 8 p.m. deadline to tender contracts to players on the 40-man roster who are either arbitration eligible, or have zero to three years of service time.
We are still waiting for an official word on who will be the Phillies pitching coach, and anything can happen at any time concerning Free Agents.
Meanwhile once again I have to say until next Monday:
