It’s an open secret that Philadelphia Phillies‘ first baseman Ryan Howard will be bought out of his contract at the end of the season, though no official announcement has been made. The latest hint is that the Phillies’ slugger and former NL MVP will soon depart Philadelphia has subtly popped up on the Phillies official online team store. The Phillies have greatly reduced the amount of Howard merchandise available on their online store and heavily discounted what jerseys and shirts remain. Even the Ryan Howard plush doll has been slashed from $21.99 to $5.99, and an infant Howard t shirt is available for just $0.99! As the Phillies last remaining 2008 World Series champion nears the end of his tenure in Philadelphia, Major League Baseball appears to be clearing it’s inventory of Howard-branded apparel.
The discounts do not affect custom, made-to-order jerseys.

While Howard jerseys and t shirts are scarce and cheap on the Phillies website, that shortage does not appear to have trickled down to the Majestic Clubhouse at Citizens Bank Park. A manager at the store, who declined to give her name, stated that they have a full inventory of Ryan Howard jerseys and t shirts and that they have not begun to discount or reduce their stock of those items.
While it’s possible (though unlikely) that this is just an oddly timed fluke, it’s worth noting that most current and former players’ jerseys (Franco, Nola, Schmidt, etc.) are all full-price, while the few remaining Carlos Ruiz jerseys are also steeply discounted online.
