While we await the details on the bigger of the two Phillies trades today, the team announced earlier that they had traded left-handed relief pitcher Antonio Bastardo to the Pittsburgh Pirates for left-handed pitcher Joely Rodriguez.
Rodriguez, 23, is a native of the Dominican Republic. This year at AA Altoona, his sixth year in the league, Rodriguez pitched to a 6-11 record in 21 starts. Through 134 innings pitched, he had 73 strikeouts and 43 walks with an ERA of 4.84. Rodriguez boasts a plus fastball with a changeup and slider in his pitching repertoire.
Bastardo, carried a 3.72 ERA in the better part of 5 seasons with the Phillies both in a middle reliever and set-up role. The knock on Bastardo was always with control. His BB/9 rose steadily throughout his career, ending 2014 averaging 4.8 walks per nine innings. The move paves the way to give southpaws Jake Diekman and Mario Hollands the upper hand at being lock for the 2015 Phillies bullpen.
