Since there was still no movement on the MacHarper, or any other FA front, and maybe the most exciting news from the Philadelphia Phillies was that another bunch of aging rock and rollers would perform at Citizens Bank Park this spring, this column will start to spend more time on Spring Training.
Phillies Coaching Staff Finalized:
First though, on Wednesday the Phillies tweeted out the final coaching assignments for 2019:
I touched on the signing of Bobby Dickerson in my last post of 1/14. Figueroa was last the Los Angles Dodgers MiLB hitting coordinator.
Spring Training 2019: Official Workout Reporting Dates Announced
This past week most teams including the Phillies announced their reporting dates for spring training 2019. Pitchers and Catchers are to report on 2/13, and full workouts on 2/18.
That does not stop players from reporting earlier if they so wish. There were multiple sitings of a beefier Odubel Herrera as evidenced by this tweet by Jim Peyton of FuturePhillies.com
Another intriguing early reporter was one of the Philles “new kids” Andrew McCutchen
Non Roster Invitees: One More addition ?
On Monday the team announced the signing of former Atlanta Braves OF Lane Adams. Last season he split time between the Braves and two AAA clubs. It was not made clear whether he would be invited to Major League camp or not.
He is not on the latest list of NRIs from Phillies.com
Spring Training NRI: RHP Pitchers
This post we will take a quick look at the only RHP on the list, Josh Martin. Next week, major news allowing, we will do the 5 LHPs.
Last season at AAA Columbus he only pitched 21.2 In. in 19 appearances. During that short time he put up a 2.91 ERA (7 ER) with 24 Ks. In 2017 LH batters hit .238 (15/63) off him.
He set the Samford U record for all time Ws at 24, taking them to the NCAA tourney for the first time in his senior year. He was picked by the Cleveland Browns in the 10th round of the June 2012 Draft.
Prognosis: At 28, and a few seasons already at AAA, he will need to wow them at ST to go north with the big club. If he does play well and they stash him in LHV, look for him to come up if needed because of injury or an extra RH arm needed for spot start – he has 5 starts in his career.
On Deck: Phillies Players back in town for a series of phan events
