While the Philadelphia Phillies still have not put a big FA signing under the Phans tree, they did make a detailed and longest pitch to potential signee Manny Machado. Also this week they announced the first non-roster invitees to Spring Training.
Phillies Make Stupid Money Pitch to Manny:
As opposed to the 90 minute stay with the New York Yankees, the Phillies and Machado met for over four hours, as well as a dinner in Center City. It was apparent that this was as strong a pitch as the team could make to throw “stupid money” at the infielder. Manny has said in recent days that he will not make a decision until at least the new year.
As usual I will not get into the other rumored players the Phillies are going after, except to say that the idea of signing Bryce Harper as well as Manny took a big hit this week. The Los Angeles Dodgers seem to be going all in on Harper, as they traded away star OF Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp, and others to apparently clear luxury cap space as well as a playing spot for Bryce.
Spring Training Non Roster Invitees:
It is a little over a month and a half until Pitchers and Catchers return to Clearwater. On Thursday the Phillies began stocking up for Spring Training by announcing the signing of seven players to MiLB contracts as as non-roster invitees: LHP Jeremy Bleich C Rob Brantly INF Phil Gosselin RHP Josh Martin C/1B/OF Matt McBride INF Gregorio Petit OF Shane Robinson. Only Bleich was in the Phillies organization before, playing for the AAA Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs and the AA Reading Fightin’s in 2016.
As they add more early next month, I will, as I did last season, detail those players by position, and their chances for making the Bigs, or their designations in MiLB.
It looks to be pretty quiet at least until after the New Year, but you never know.
Meanwhile I would be remiss after the ugly, but gutsy performance by that other outdoor team on Pattison Avenue, to stay alive in the playoff hunt, if I did not bring back:
