The Phillies made one roster move following Saturday’s loss to the Pirates. Outfielder Domonic Brown was recalled from AAA Lehigh Valley and will join the team in Pittsburgh for the series finale and start in right field.
Brown, 27, was hitting just .257 on the season at AAA. Through 11 games in June however, the former top prospect is batting .304 with a pair of home runs, his only two at Lehigh Valley this season.
Brown has not played at the major league level this season. After injuring his Achilles tendon in spring training and starting the season on the disabled list, the Phillies chose to keep Brown in Lehigh Valley after less than impressive numbers to start the year.
To make room for Brown, the Phillies optioned outfielder and first baseman Darin Ruf to AAA. In 102 at-bats this season, Ruf was batting just .235 with 3 home runs. The demotion of Ruf leaves either Maikel Franco or Chase Utley as the only two viable options to backup Ryan Howard at first base.
In other minor league news, Phillies center field prospect Roman Quinn was placed on the DL Saturday for the Reading Fightin Phils. Quinn suffered what is being called a strained quad trying to leg out a single in his third at-bat Friday night.
Quinn has been a stand-out star for AA Reading this season hitting .300/.351/.430. His 28 stolen bases are still tops in the Eastern League.
