The Lowdown: The Sixers are still looking for their first win of the young 2014-15 season as they welcome the Houston Rockets to South Philadelphia. The Rockets, behind the formidable duo of James Harden and Dwight Howard, have yet to lose after defeating the Los Angeles Lakers on opening night followed by the Utah Jazz and the rebuilding Boston Celtics.
The Sixers have dropped three straight and have yet to get a win this season as the fourth quarter has proven their Achilles heel as shown in their losses to the Milwaukee Bucks and the Miami Heat. In both cases the team played hard and were in the game, but just couldn’t finish the job in the final frame. In addition, the Sixers are allowing an average of 103.3 points per game behind a porous defense that continues to have turnover trouble. Nerlens Noel’s 8.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game notwithstanding, the Sixers defense is still very much a work in progress.
While many will say that this Rockets team has yet to be really tested, this Sixers roster isn’t the team to do it. Houston is averaging 105.3 points scored per game, which is more than enough to top the Sixers average of 89.3. And then you have Harden and Howard who are averaging 25.3 points and 16.3 points per game respectively. While Houston’s bench could be an issue down the road, the Rockets should have no problem with this very young Sixers team even if coach Kevin McHale feels that his team’s offense still needs work.
If you’re looking for the first Sixers win of the season, I’m afraid this probably isn’t going to be it. The last time the Sixers opened the season 0-4 was during the 2010-11. If everything continues to go according to the Hinkie Plan, the team might not get that first win until the rebuilding Orlando Magic come to town on November 5.
