Derik Hamilton – USA Today
Coming into this game there was one major question for the Eagles. Who is going to be the third string quarterback, Tim Tebow or Matt Barkley? Tim Tebow showed he deserves the job thoroughly outplaying Barkley going 11 of 17 for 189 yards and two touchdowns as the Eagles fell to the Jets 18-24 in their preseason finale. Tebow finished the preseason 21 of 36 for 286 yards, 2 touchdowns and one interception. He also ran fourteen times for 82 yards and a touchdown.
The main point of this game was for the Eagles to evaluate much of the depth as few very starters saw action in this game. Linebacker Kiko Alonso was the only starter to see time making his highly anticipated debut playing just one series. The Eagles coaches are now tasked with cutting the roster down to 53 players and some made Chip’s decision much more difficult. One player who certainly made a case for a roster spot was wide receiver Rasheed Bailey, a local product out of Delaware Valley University. Bailey caught 10 passes for 97 yards this preseason, including a excellent catch for a touchdown tonight and has tremendous talent. The Eagles do have a log jam at receiver however, but Bailey certainly showed enough to at least earn a spot on the practice squad.
Another interesting battle heading into this game was who was going to be the 4th (if they choose to carry 4) running back spot. Kenjon Barner, who has had a tremendous preseason, especially on special teams or Raheem Moster. Mostert played a majority of the game, which would indicate Barner already has that 4th spot locked down. Mostert has tremendous talent though and will hopefully be another practice squad candidate.
With cuts coming in the next few days, it will be interesting to see who will makes the final roster. Sam Bradford and the Eagles will open their season on Monday Night Football September 14th against a difficult Atlanta team. Fasten your seat belts Eagles fans, regular season football is just around the corner.
