The Temple Owls (8-1, 5-0) go on their last road trip of the season this time to Tampa Fl, to face American Athletic Conference East opponent USF Bulls (5-4, 3-2). Temple coming off a 60-40 win over SMU will have to prove that was an anomaly in their top 10 defensive season, but in what is a running theme in these previews, the Owls will once again face a dual threat in QB sophomore quarterback Quinton Flowers. His 657 yards (4.9 avg.) and seven tds by foot, and 1,446 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions at a 59.5 percent completion rate, w/ his arm comes out of a spread offense. Their biggest running threat is Sophomore Marion Mack, 835 yards (5.8 avg.) and four tds. He is second in the AAC in rushing, 104.4 ypg., behind Temple’s Jahad Thomas,970 yards, 107.8 ypg. Head Coach Matt Rhule said of USF “I think this is one of the best teams in the conference and they are getting better, they are young and Willie Taggart is an outstanding coach,” They are hot as well, having won 4 of their last five, last week winning 22 – 17 @ East Carolina. A win for them will keep them, 1 game behind the Owls in the AAC East w/ 2 games left as well as becoming bowl eligible, so they have a lot to play for.
Temple will have to keep up their historic season by beating the 1st team in Florida – 0 for their last 10 -since Dec. 3, 1938 when the Owls beat Florida, 20-12 (the final game as head coach for legendary Temple coach Glenn “Pop” Warner) but they also have a lot to play for, as a win will earn Temple the AAC East Title, and a spot in the inaugural AAC Championship Game, w/ still a possibility of hosting the game on 12/5/15. “We know what’s at stake,” senior linebacker Tyler Matakevich said this week. “You really can’t start thinking about that stuff. “You just have to do what you’ve been doing since the beginning — get back to our process and that’s what coaches have been saying.” Temple comes into the game as a slight road favorite and they will need to play clean and smart to keep this dream season moving forward….
Jahad Thomas enters the game with 970 rushing yards so w/ 30 more yds he will be the 10th Temple player ever to break the 1,000 yd mark, and the 13th time this was done since 1894. He also has a rushing TD in every game this season
P. J. Walker w/ two TDs would tie the school record (49) and only needs 12 completions for second all-time.
A win gets Matt Rhule back to a .500 career record.
Not only would it be the 1st win in FL since ’38, but it a win would be the 1st time in history the Owls went 6-0 on the road.
