Tyler Matakevich Tulane @ Temple 2014
Finally Fall in Philadelphia and the Temple Owls (4-0,1-0) return to Lincoln Financial Field for an American Athletic Conference High Noon Homecoming Showdown w/ the Tulane Green Wave (2-2,1-0). It looks to be a perfect day for football, mostly sunny in the mid 60’s w/ light northerly winds.
Temple is still drying out from their 37-3 sloshing of the Charlotte 49ers (TEMPLE …49ERS, 37-3).and Tulane is also coming off a win over conference foe UCF (whom the Owls will play next week) 45-31. In that game Wave QB Tanner Lee had four touchdown tosses and is 69-125 passing, 878 yards, 7 TDs, 2 INT on the season. He has two WR that each have over 200 Yds and 5 TDS between them in Teddy Veal and Devon Breaux.
Of course they have to face the stout Temple defense featuring the NCAA active leading tackler Tyler Matakevich.
The Tulane defense is opportunistic w/5 turnovers last week leading to 28 points, and are a +1 in the TO ratio. One of their top D-men is Jr. LB Nico Marley (yes, a Grandson of Bob Marley) who has 31 tackles, 4.5 TFL this season.
On the Temple offensive side QB P. J. Walker will continue to spread the ball around and of course hand it off to Jahad Thomas, though coach Matt Rhule keeps saying he wants to spell him more and Fr. Ryquell Armstead really helped in that area last week.
Once again Temple is a double digit favorite and are starting to get attention in the national media. They need to shake off any rust from the bye week and get off to a good start to keep the crowd in it and they should be in good shape.
Temple has won their last 6 homecoming games @ the Linc (14-10 overall since 1989).
Before winning last year’s season ending game over Tulane 10-3, the last time they met (Tulane winning 20-14) was the 1st Sugar Bowl on 1/1/35. I remember it well 😉
I unfortunately will not be able to cover the game as I will be on the road visiting friends, but Sunday I will post some comments on the game from what I read, browse, and see in replay for a short recap.
