Union fall to Galaxy 2-0 in LA

In a match they were never really in, the Union dropped all three points to the host Galaxy as Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted a brace.

Union first XI: Andre Blake; Kai Wagner, Auston Trusty, Jack Elliott, Ray Gaddis; Jamiro Montero, Haris Medunjanin, Alejandro Bedoya, Brenden Aaronson; Marco Fabian, Cory Burke

Galaxy first XI: David Bingham; Rolf Feltscher, Daniel Steres, Diego Polenta, Jorgen Skjelvik; Joe Corona, Jonathan dos Santos, Romain Alessandrini, Sebastian Lletget, Uriel Antuna; Zlatan Ibrahimovic

First Half

The Union started slowly and the Galaxy pounced on them, creating pressure and chances and pinning the Union into their own end in the first fifteen minutes. Disaster soon followed in multiple forms; first, Marco Fabian injured his left ankle in a non-contact injury near midfield and could not continue. He was replaced by Fafa Picault in the 22nd minute. Five minutes after that, an open cross found an unmarked Zlatan who made no mistake, pounding a header past Blake for a 1-0 Galaxy lead.

As so often is the case when one team controls the match, the Galaxy began receiving the benefit of calls, none bigger than the penalty award in the 36th minute when Zlatan became entangled in the box with Kai Wagner. Zlatan appeared to put his hands on Wagner before the cross into the box to him as well as after, but Ibra received a little superstar attention from the official (who even went to video review to “confirm” the dubious penalty) then coolly sent Blake the other way for his second goal of the night.

The Union midfield struggled to start any kind of attack in the first half, and the Galaxy ended up with a whopping 61 percent possession through 45 minutes.

Second Half

Down 2-0, the Union finally started to put together passes and then chances. Alejandro Bedoya hit the post on a scramble in the 54th in what might have been the U’s best chance. The speed of Picault helped open up the match some, but any chance of a comeback was snuffed out when Auston Trusty (already on a yellow) left his boot out and caught Sebastien Lletget, sending the US National to the ground and Trusty to the showers with a second yellow and a red. The Galaxy saw the match out after that.

Game Notes

Trusty will miss the next match due to his ejection. Marco Fabian’s status is up in the air following his injury and subsequent substitution.
