It’s time again for the Main Line Vs Broad Street “Mayors Cup” rivalry as the FCS #8 Villanova Wildcats (1-0, 0-0 CAA) bus over to the Linc to face the Temple Owls (0-1, 0-0 AAC).
The series is deadlocked at 15–15–2. I remember well the scintillating 0-0 tie in the inaugural meeting on 11/10/28. Temple has had a fairly easy time the last few meetings, including a 41-10 win in their last game on 8/31/12. The Owls have won three in a row.
For the 1st time in those 32 games, each team will have 1st year head coaches as Temple’s Geoff Collins and Villanova’s Mark Ferrante will be manning the sidelines for the 2nd time at the helm.
Last Time Out:
In the first game for Mark Ferrante, they also gave him his first career win, 38-35 over the Lehigh Mountain Hawks.
Temple is coming off an all around 49-16 drubbing by Notre Dame. There were some positives in the 2nd half of the game, but not many.
The main reason the Wildcats rank so high in FCS, and the main man to watch, is Jr QB Zach Bednarczyk. Last week he completed 17 of 23, for 209 yards and two TD’s. He added a rushing TD, while gaining 73 yards on nine carries. That dual threat along with SR RB Matt Gudzak, who had a career day last week rushing for 142 yds, and two TD’s, will be another test for the Owls run Defense.
After last week, Temple has to prove to the Cherry and White fans, and themselves, that they are a much better football team than they showed against ND. I do expect ‘Nova to put up a good fight, but eventually the Owls depth and the emergence of “Mayhem” on the defensive side, should hold sway and win this one 35-10.
Unfortunately due to social obligations I will not be able to watch or cover this game as I normally would, but I will have a short recap and thoughts on the game posting sometime Sunday.
